This month, we’re catching up with Rhys, our Head of Web Design, to learn more about his role and the creative thinking behind the websites we design and build. From creating intuitive user experiences and beautiful website designs to leading our talented web design team, Rhys plays a key role in helping our clients establish a strong online presence. We also get to know a little more about Rhys outside of work – including a few fun facts you can bring up the next time you chat with him!
1. Can you tell us a little about your role at Bubble and what a typical day looks like?
As Head of Web Design, I lead our website design team, making sure projects run smoothly from initial concepts through to launch. My days are a mix of creative design, team support, client meetings, quality reviews, planning workloads and working closely with our development, content and SEO teams to deliver the best possible websites.
2. What’s your favourite part of being Head of Web Design?
Seeing a project come together from an initial idea into a website that genuinely helps a client’s business grow is incredibly rewarding. I also enjoy mentoring the team and helping designers develop their skills and confidence.
3. What makes a great website, in your opinion?
A great website isn’t just about looking good. It needs to be easy to use, accessible, fast, and built around the needs of the user. If visitors can quickly find what they’re looking for and are encouraged to take action, then the website is doing its job.
4. What’s one piece of advice you give clients before starting a new website project?
Spend time understanding your audience and your goals before thinking about design. The more clearly you define what success looks like, the better the final website will be.
5. How has web design changed since you started your career?
Web design has become much more focused on user experience, accessibility and performance rather than just aesthetics. We now design more than ever with data, SEO and conversion in mind, creating websites that not only look great but deliver measurable business results. The introduction of AI into our workflows has also transformed the way we work, helping to streamline repetitive tasks, improve efficiency and give us more time to focus on creativity and strategic thinking.
6. What website design trend are you most excited about right now?
I’m particularly excited by the move towards more personalised and intelligent web experiences. Creating tailored user journeys, combined with subtle animations and interactions, helps make websites feel more engaging while maintaining a strong focus on usability. AI is another area that’s evolving incredibly quickly, and it’s something I keep a close eye on. New tools and integrations are emerging all the time, helping us streamline workflows, work more efficiently and ultimately spend more time focusing on creativity and delivering better results for our clients.
7. What advice would you give to someone hoping to build a career in web design?
Stay curious and never stop learning. Design trends and technology are constantly evolving, so being open to feedback and continually developing your skills is just as important as being creative.
8. When you’re not designing websites, how do you like to spend your time?
Most of my time is spent with my wife and two children. I also enjoy going to the gym, keeping active, working on personal creative projects and playing video games outside of work.
9. What’s your go-to way to unwind after a busy week?
A good walk, spending time with the family, or switching off with some gaming usually does the trick.
10. What’s one thing your colleagues might be surprised to learn about you?
Outside of work, I’m a keen gamer and enjoy collecting vinyl records. I also earned a black belt in kickboxing.
